Continuity & Comprehensiveness of Care

Factors to Ensure Success

Adequate Infrastructure Support

Other infrastructure supports must also be adequate to ensure continuity and comprehensiveness of primary care. These include support for:

  • Information management and technology (IM/IT) - (See module on Information Technology.)
  • Innovative ways to enable the physical development of cooperative interdisciplinary primary care practices and/or collaborative models. Given the main focus of family physicians on clinical practice and patient care, one of the largest barriers to the development of cooperative practices for many physicians may be the need to manage real estate and re-development costs associated with such material requirements as facilities, furniture and equipment in the development of these models. While there is no easy or single answer to these issues, community partnerships should be considered as one source of assistance as well as the availability of special development/maintenance fees or incentive payments negotiated with governments or regional municipalities.
