Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Integration of New or Under-utilized Skills

The integration of new skills to health professionals, such as is witnessed in the evolution of pharmacy practice to include additional counseling services, requires the achievement of agreement amongst health professionals in primary care practice. Agreement amongst providers is essential to:

  • Affect culture change
  • Negotiate the overlap of responsibilities in each provider's role
  • Reach levels of provider and patient acceptance
  • Ensure continuing patient / provider satisfaction in role identities

Primary care groups may need to discuss at length a methodology to ensure that the appropriate provider sees the patient at any given visit, based on the expressed needs of the patient on that specific occasion.
