Opportunities in Education
Academic health science centers are increasingly committed to developing interdisciplinary models of undergraduate and postgraduate education and training. Primary care groups that include interdisciplinary collaboration may find that opportunities for teaching and learning in these models will expand significantly after introduction and incorporation of collaborative models of practice. This is seen as a particularly important opportunity for family physician educators as healthcare leaders in primary care to show the way for the better integration of family medicine and primary care services into undergraduate and postgraduate education and training.
Regardless of the team model chosen, interdisciplinary education within the model will facilitate and enhance interdisciplinary practice. Attention should be paid to the integration of both. Exposure to these models will also contribute to the family practice student and resident learning experience.
