Scopes of Practice
Scopes of practice issues will arise, requiring clarification about the defined scopes of practice of family physicians as compared to other primary care providers. In pursuing these discussions, family physicians may find it helpful to consider these issues within the context of professional regulatory requirements as defined by medical regulatory authorities as well as within the context of legislation as defined by each provincial / territorial government for its health professionals. A careful and detailed analysis of not only the skill sets of the providers within the family practice or primary care group but also the legislated and regulated responsibilities of team members may help identify service gaps in the interdisciplinary care model.
