Overcoming Resistance
to Current Remuneration Models

Remuneration

1) The perceived benefits of new or revised models of remuneration for family physicians may include:

  • Income predictability, especially as it affects cash flow
  • Guaranteed income in spite of changes in workload
  • ncreased revenue when providing broad-based, comprehensive care
  • Encouraging patients to see either their own family physician or one associated with them as their preferred provider for primary care services
  • Shared on-call coverage
  • Rewards for comprehensive and preventative care
  • An opportunity for improved organization and tracking of clinical information using clinical technology

2) The postulated benefits of changes to remuneration models for patients include:

  • Improved access to primary care
  • More coordinated and less episodic care
  • An emphasis on preventative care

3) Provincial / territorial health systems are seen to benefit from:

  • Improved access for their jurisdictional populations to the whole health system
  • Decreased use of Emergency Departments by patients requiring non-urgent, urgent and emergent care
  • Healthier populations
